Palm Twist Features a Rotating Display and Gaming Controls

Pre Central started a design contest for Palm mockups a while ago and among the finalists we found the Palm Twist model, created by Adam Wrigley. This handset sports concave sides, for easier grip, but its main appeal is the screen, that will rotate 90 degrees and reveal gaming controls, as shown in the image below.
Palm Twist Features a Rotating Display and Gaming Controls
As you can see, you can use both landscape and portrait screen orientation on this Palm concept. The device also brings another innovation to the table: no input or output ports are included, so the phone relies completely on wireless connectivity, for transfers and even charging (via inductive charging base).
Will this device win the contest? What do you say?

Pre Central Debuts Palm Mockup Contest; Winner Gets a Free Palm Pre 2

Good news for all of you designers out there: Pre Central came up with a contest that involves creating a mockup of the future Palm device. Well, since the contest began in September, it was refering to the just launched Palm Pre 2. The prize for the winning design is a free Palm Pre 2, that went on sale last week.

There’s also bad news: entries for the contest ended on October 15, so all we can do is sit and watch the finalists battling it out. Over the next weeks, we’ll show you some of the entries in this contest and we’ll praise or criticise the design of the Palm smartphone of the future.

PlayStation Phone Confirmed and Pictured! Specs and Genuine PSP Phone Images

We’ve shown you a ton of PSP Phone concepts, actually our first post on this site was about such a device and now finally there’s a real handset to look at. Uncovered by Engadget, this PlayStation Phone prototype is actually nifty looking and pretty much everything we predicted it would be: a hybrid between the XPERIA X10 and the PSP Go!.
PlayStation Phone Confirmed and Pictured! Specs and Genuine PSP Phone Images HERE
Apparently, it’ll run Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) and feature a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, 512MB RAM, 1GB ROM, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth, WiFi and a display with a diagonal that fits in the 3.7 – 4.1 inch range. Notice that between the directional pad and the action buttons there’s a multitouch touchpad, with yet unknown use.

TAG-Heuer Formula-1 Watch

TAG-Heuer Formula-1 Watch: As we know TAG-Heuer is celebrating 150 years of being in the business and The Carrera Calibre 1887 Chronograph is already on our wishlist. So it comes as a great pleasure when designers decide to commemorate the event with their own refreshing take. Inspired by the TAG-Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 36 RS Caliper Chronograph model, designer Peter Vardai chose to model his version on Formula-1 and Mercedes-Benz combo. Awesome!

Telus Phone Design, Created by Luca Benedetti

Designer Luca Benedetti recently showed us a couple of his works and shared with us his professional career, that involved an Industrial Design degree received in Perugia, Italy. Moving on to his works, we discover the following concept phones, designed with the Telus branding on board. The first one comes with an impressive chin, that would even make the first HTC Android phones jealous.
Telus Phone Design, Created by Luca Benedetti
This is an incredibly slim device, that we suppose lacks any kind of camera and doesn’t sport an impressive battery. It would make a great low end phone, that’s also eco-friendly. The second design is shown below, a more bulky handset, with regular touchscreen and possibly a camera at the back. Basically, it’s a more beefed out version of the first phone.

New Nokia Phone Design Comes From Russia

Vladimir Zorin recently showed us one of his Nokia concept phones, that has yet to receive a name. This original device is far from the Nokia models we currently known and it adopts a bold and innovative design, using a square screen segment that’s bigger than the main body of the handset.
New Nokia Phone Design Comes From Russia
We suppose that this is in fact a square phone and that the keypad piece is able to rotate underneath the screen, but that’s only our speculation. If so, the display would be a touchscreen and the device would become ideal for tweens. What do you say?

Flex Click Cellphone Really Makes Your Feel the “Touchscreen Click”

Ever wanted to combine the touchscreen experience with the feeling of pressing a genuine physical button? Valentin Neda has the next best thing, through a phone design called Flex Click, a cellphone that provides tactile feedback while pressing touch buttons on the screen.
Flex Click Cellphone Really Makes Your Feel the Touchscreen Click
Micro switches are placed under the curved Soft Touch display and they’ll reduce the stress on the user’s fingers, for an unique touch experience. These switches can be pressed in the spot where one expects to find a real button or control and they also depend on the displayed content, as the concept’s creator claims.
Is it just me or is there something screaming BlackBerry and WebOS about this device? More images and info after the break...

Aquaphone Relies on Water Bubble Interface

Bon Seop-Ku had an original idea when it came to his Samsung concept phone: an interface that relies on water bubbles manipulated by electric current. Dubbed the Aquaphone, the handset is pictured below and looks like a very fragile piece of gadgetry, but a fashionable item, too.
Aquaphone Relies on Water Bubble Interface
It will be interesting to learn how the battery of this device will be incorporated into the Samsung Aquaphone and we guess that the display is only limited to black, white and gray maybe. It would be cool if some other substance, besides water was involved. Any ideas? This concept could be the start of something cool and maybe a new type of e-readers?

HTC Future Smartphone by Hazo Design

We received the following HTC concept from Hazo Design, without any mentions of specifications or design traits, so we’ll speculate on this device. This is possibly the longest HTC model I’ve seen and the Android logo on the side points towards a Froyo/Gingerbread/Honeycomb smartphone, with a tiny camera on the front upper side (unless that’s the Home button on the lower side and HTC is spelled the wrong way).
HTC Future Smartphone by Hazo Design
If I would be daydreaming about this handset, I’d say it features a transparent screen, that allows the user to enter a new type of augmented reality and take photos easily. Am I assuming too much?

iPhone 6 Concept Takes Us Even Further Into the Future

Designer Archil Vardidze recently showed us a new iPhone concept, that moves even further away from the current innovations. This is the iPhone 6, that got rid of the antenna problem by moving it externally. Button material has changed and the device is based on an aluminum shell.
iPhone 6 Concept Takes Us Even Further Into the Future
Solar batteries are also featured on this handset, expanding the life of the iPhone 6 and as far as the design is concerned, the new iPhone is more square-ish, but still slim. The look of the Home button has changed and it makes it look as if it has push levels, possibly for more than one command. Also, this iPhone seems a big longer and wider than its predecessors. Chromium Tablet Should be Made by HP and Wacom

Designer Yigit Cinar is so serious about the tablet concept shown below, that we even mentioned the companies that should be involved in the making process: Wacom (touchpad), HP (hardware) and Google (Chromium). Cinar created this tablet design using Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash.
Chromium Tablet Should be Made by HP and Wacom
The slate comes with multiple USB ports, a HDMI port and a removable battery. There’s also an interesting part of this device: a removable hand mobile with a 2.3 inch color display that can be carried around by the user and turned into an MP3 player or tablet remote control.
Also included on the specifications list are the following:
- two cameras: 2MP forward cam, rear facing 5MP unit with autofocus
- an accelerometer and magnetometer
- 3GB RAM, 120GB storage
- 4G cellular voice, data, MMS, SMS
- GPS, FM radio, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
- sturdy case
- 16:9 1920 x 1080 capacitive touchscreen, 14 inches in diagonal

Samsung Jot is a Rotary Dial Cellphone… With a Pen

Rotary phones are coming back in fashion, since we’ve seen at least two handset designs involving such a mechanism. Samsung Jot is also added to the list, courtesy of designer Raymond Bessemer, the creator of this rotary dial cellphone.
Samsung Jot is a Rotary Dial Cellphone... With a Pen
The device doesn’t rely solely on the circular buttons, so it also features a touchpad and stylus, as shown in the following image. “Jot” comes from the handset’s function that allows its user to jot down notes and text messages. An OLED display is also part of the specs and remember this is ONLY a Samsung phone design for now, so don’t expect it to pop up in stores yet.

Flex iPhone is Actually a Sony Ericsson

Designer Fabrice Bardon almost had us thinking that was an unusual iPhone, but then we spotted the Sony Ericsson branding on the device’s pictures. Dubbed the Flex iPhone, this handset has nothing in common with Apple’s cellphone, but a lot in common with the future and modern devices.
Flex iPhone is Actually a Sony Ericsson
We’re dealing with a phone with modern design, thanks to a flexible body, a touch keypad, LCD screen and a shape that reminds us of the older communication devices. Well, the Flex iPhone looks nifty, but let’s hope the material it’s based on is not as fragile as the pics make it seem…

XPERIA X12 Looks Like HTC Material

I don’t know why, but something out of the XPERIA X12 concept screams “HTC Android Phone”… it might be the industrial design. Anyhow, this Frank Tobias piece of work is a full touchscreen smartphone, with multitouch support and the user’s choice of Windows Mobile or Android. An 8MP camera with HD video also makes its way on board.

X-RAY Transparent Phone Stuns Us; Hardcore Industrial Design

We know that this is not a concept, but we simply had to share with you the beautiful X-RAY Phone, created by Tokujin Yoshioka. The device bears the KDDI iida branding and it’s already selling in Japan. We love it because it’s got a transparent case, showing all the components inside.
X RAY Transparent Phone Stuns Us; Hardcore Industrial Design
Also, that cool one line LED matrix display is a nice touch, making the handset even more “electronicky”. Specs are not that impressive: infrared connectivity, 3 inch widescreen display, 8MP camera, 828MB of memory and mobile payment support. Anyone know what the price is, for this beauty? More images and info after the break... [via Yanko Design and GSM Dome]

nVue Mobile Phone

Foldable mobile phones have been floating on the interwebs for some time now, sadly only as concepts and designs. Dragan Trenchevski created such a device, dubbed the nVue and reminding us a bit of the Microsoft Courier e-reader and the Nintendo DS console. As you can see, this is a foldable handset with 2 AMOLED displays.
nVue Mobile Phone Looks Like a Microsoft Courier and Nintendo DS Hybrid
Each screen is able to run independently and they can also work together as a single widescreen display. Efficient multitasking is the purpose of this concept, that can also be turned into a tablet PC, media player, e-reader and hopefully a console. There’s a 10MP camera on board the device and it seems like a pretty good tool for video chat. More images and info after the break...

BA Smartphone Concept, Rotating Phone With Physical Keyboard

Maleville Sébastien recently detailed the BA Smartphone concept, a pretty innovative idea that can be seen in the images below. This is a rotating phone with a physical keyboard and touch display. The BA name comes from the number eight in Chinese, that is the symbol of full versatility , both horizontally and vertically.
BA Smartphone Concept is a Rotating Phone With Physical Keyboard
The handset is made of aluminum and its structure is divided into two equal parts. The top part includes a touchscreen display, while the bottom part includes a physical keyboard with pretty big and comfy keys. They’ll come in handy for elderly users and folks who want to avoid mistyping. More images and info after the break...

WePhone Android 2.2 Smartphone

Considering the Joy Studios-designed WePhone concept bears the same logo as the WePad (WeTab) tablet, it might be related to it. Anyhow, this handset is pretty good-looking, with a sleek design and pretty good specifications, as you can see below.
WePhone Android 2.2 Smartphone Might be Related to the WeTab
WePhone incorporates a pretty big display, that reminds us of a tablet rather than a handset: 4.7 inches, Sony Super LCD touchscreen, 1280 x 720 pixels. The specs list also includes GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3G+ connectivity, an 8MP camera with flash, 720p video capture and mini HDMI out. 32GB of storage are available, as well as Android buttons on the front. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X9, a Frank Tobias Design

When XPERIA designs appear, it doesn’t rain, it pours… Here’s another Sony Ericsson concept, the XPERIA X9, created by Frank Tobias. This is a front full QWERTY smartphone with an 8 megapixel camera with flash, HD video and your choice of Android or Windows Mobile. What do you say?
Would this seemingly business device rival a BlackBerry or Nokia E Series handset?

XPERIA Meets Windows Phone 7 Through the X1-X7 Concept

Juris15 from Esato is at work again, creating an XPERIA concept with Windows Phone 7 on board. He also designed a specific interface for the OS, as you can see in the last image below. Dubbed Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1-X7, the phone is a full touch smartphone with an 8.1MP camera and the front buttons required by Microsoft in order for WP7 to work.
XPERIA Meets Windows Phone 7 Through the X1 X7 Concept
There’s also a camera button on the side and a brand new version of the Timescape/Mediascape UI, the XPERIAscape. Considering that Sony Ericsson just announced it’ll launch its first Windows Phone 7 handset in 2011 and the fact that Microsoft has yet to implement a decent file manager on this platform, could SE adjust what’s wrong in the new OS, if possible? Sony Ericsson Ulvo (P2), the P1i Replacement?

Shane A. Bygrave is a designer name we haven’t heard in a long while on our site, but now he’s back to posting on Esato his Sony Ericsson concept phones. This time we’re dealing with an upgrade to the P1i model, that’s part of the GreenHeart series and should be known as SE Ulvo aka P2.
Sony Ericsson Ulvo (P2), the P1i Replacement?
This is a candybar handset with a front full QWERTY keyboard, that could come in handy, specially when combined with a decent touchscreen display. Sony Ericsson Ulvo might prove to be a thick handset in the end, but it’s a mere design for now, so we’ll let it be.

Apple iPad 2 Design, Created by Joy Studios

The German firm Joy Studios sent us a tip concerning an iPad 2 design, that you can see after the break. There’s even a video of the device at the end of the article, if you’re interested. Turns out that this new slate runs iOS 4.2 and uses the iPhone 4 design traits. For more info be sure to read on.

Joy Studios’ creation supports WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3G+ connectivity and GPS, plus it incorporates a 3MP FaceTime camera and comes with a dock connector.
